Rant: The food court at the old Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi is just gone now

I went back there last weekend for the first time in maybe 8 years, and the whole center section where the fountain and all the tables were is just a big empty concrete pad. It used to be the only spot with any light left. A security guy told me they ripped it out last fall because the roof was leaking so bad it became a safety thing. Has anyone else seen a mall lose its last decent spot like that?

That's just sad... they took out the heart of the place. Did the security guy say if they have any plans at all to put something new back in, or is it just going to stay a concrete slab forever?

The fountain area was the only good part left.

Does anybody know if they're turning that concrete slab into a memorial for all the Cinnabons we lost... or maybe just a big, sad parking spot for the employees? I mean, I get the roof was leaking, but that fountain was the only thing keeping the place from looking like a weird, abandoned airplane hangar. I remember sitting there eating a Sbarro slice and watching kids throw pennies in, hoping for a wish or something. Now it's just a gray rectangle that probably mocks you every time you walk by. I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a little misty-eyed seeing it gone, but also I'm old enough to know malls die slow, awkward deaths. Maybe we can all just pretend it was always a concrete slab and spare ourselves the nostalgia...
