My favorite camera lens bit the dust inside the old Fox Run Mall in New Hampshire
Was getting some awesome shots of the empty food court when the autofocus just seized up and made this grinding noise after two years of perfect use. Has anyone else had gear crap out on them mid-exploration or am I just unlucky?

Just seized up and made this grinding noise" - see, I gotta push back a little here. It sucks when gear dies, no question. But honestly? A camera lens lasting two whole years of active use in abandoned buildings with all that dust, moisture, and debris floating around isn't bad luck. That's actually kind of impressive. Those old mall environments are brutal on electronics (think about all that fine drywall dust and mold spores in the air). I've seen people lose lenses way faster under those conditions. Maybe have a backup body or lens cap ready next time you're poking around places like that.

Two years is a decent run for gear in a dustbowl like that. Sounds like the lens did its job and then some before calling it quits.
