My cubicle job makes me crave the decay of old malls
Another day of staring at spreadsheets while my boss yells about numbers. Snuck out early to walk through the shut down Valley View Center, floors covered in dust. Remembered going there as a kid for new shoes, now it's just echoes and cracked tiles. This place feels more honest than any corporate mission statement.

That's a bit much for some cracked tiles and dust. Decay isn't honest, it's just what happens when money leaves. Comparing a dead mall to a living job seems like looking for meaning in all the wrong places.

Totally, those places just feel bleak, not deep.

Back in 2019, I spent an afternoon at the empty Crossroads Mall just to clear my head. I get that need for a space that feels real after too much time under fluorescent lights. In my case, what worked was setting aside one weekend morning a month to explore places like that, without any plan. It let me step out of the daily grind and just be in a quiet, unchanged spot for a bit. Your mileage may vary, but for me, it made going back to the spreadsheets on Monday feel a little less heavy. Those places have a quiet truth to them that you don't get in an office.
