Just realized I used to rush through malls, but now I take my time in the empty ones.

I was at the old Sunrise Galleria in Mesa last week and actually sat on a fountain bench for 20 minutes, just listening to the quiet. Anyone else find they notice way more details when they aren't trying to buy anything?

The old fountain at the Galleria still has those tiny blue tiles. I counted 47 of them in one cracked section while I was sitting there. It made me realize those malls are like museums now, full of design choices from when they were built. You can see the patterns in the floor and the shapes of the light fixtures when nobody's walking past them. It's a totally different feeling than shopping, more like quietly looking at a time capsule. I actually prefer it this way.

I used to see empty malls as just sad. After reading your post, I get the appeal of slowing down to see the details. It really is a different way to experience the place.

The Sunrise Galleria had a weird smell near the food court, like old popcorn and cleaner. I noticed it because I was just standing there, not going anywhere. It's funny how you pick up on stuff like that when you aren't in a rush, like ray_foster67 said. The quiet makes the small things seem bigger.
